TechCult.com: Your Tech Tabloid (and my newest project)

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that I was playing with the idea of launching a tech celebrities blog. Over this time I maturated the idea, and arrived to the conclusion that perhaps I should broaden the scope of the site to all things tech.

Now you are surely thinking: Jeez, another boring tech blog. Well, not quite. In fact that will be the main differentiator of the site. We will cover all things tech, but always with a funny and sarcastic slant. The idea is to keep you updated with what is happening on the tech world, but making sure that you will get a couple of laughs while doing it.

The domain I settled for is TechCult.com, and you can already head over to read some articles (there are 10 published at the moment).

tech cult

I am aware that the success of the site will depend almost exclusively on the quality of the writers, so I made sure to bring some high calibers aboard. We got writers that also contribute to Wired.com, Cracked.com and GeeksAreSexy.net. Here is a quote from the latest article, titled “The 5 Worst Reassurances in Tech History“:

This incredible assurance, reported in no less a publication than Time magazine, was typical of the hyper-hype leading up to the release of the Segway. Pundits and professionals built it up so high the makers used the Empire State building as a footrest, and it became pretty clear that if the cure for cancer was announced on December 3rd 2001 it would have had to wait until Segway Incorporated were finished talking. Considering the real-world reaction to the “revolutionary” product, we can only conclude the preview model Steve Jobs and others were exposed to was coated in LSD-and-sugar frosting.

Good stuff eh? If you want more just head to the blog. Or, if you are already convinced that it deserves a place in your RSS reader, here is the feed link.

I like the header. But then I’m a big fan of white space :-)

Looks good - bookmarked for further visits.

Like the idea, the design is very plain and boring though. Usually I love your simplicity (like on here) but this one could do some work in that regard.

Good luck on the new adventure, I’m sure it will be a success

@Glen, thanks for the input, I might add more salt to it indeed soon.

The idea sounds good. Here is what i want to say about the blog :
    - Personally i don’t really like the design since it just looks like another TechBlog. With the huge number of techblog already it would be better if TechCult gives something fresh.
    - The appearance is too plain. I know this could be a clean design but the color combination doesn’t give a specific color that would be remembered by the readers like TechCrunch with it’s white and green or MakeUseOf with it’s white and blue
    - I would prefer to put the author on the summary of each post rather than on the full article so people can see before they decide to read the complete post
I know this is still under development and there will be more improvements as the blog growing. However i think it’s all depend on how you promote the blog and i believe you are the expert for that. Congratulation and goodluck..

The blog seems interesting already, but as time passes I know you will improve it to be one of the best. By the way, the writers are really good looking?

  12. Daniel Scocco on June 4th, 2008 6:32 am

@James, thanks for the input. I do have another designer planned for it, but it will come in some time.

@Miguel, I can only speak for myself, and I sure am :) .

Got something to say?
