You Can Make Money Online Doing Anything You Want

I often get people asking me the following question: “What is the best way to make money online?” They wonder if they should focus on blogging, affiliate marketing, search engine optimization, web design, selling ebooks, or what.

My short answer to that question is: there is no “best” way. All business models can work if you work hard, smartly, and persistently.

The proof to this is the fact that you have millionaires on virtually any segment and business model around. You have millionaire bloggers, affiliate marketers, web designers, ebook sellers, SEOs and so on.

What is more interesting: there are people out there making a ton of money even with trivial services like directory submissions. Anyone can make directory submissions, yet I know people who make six figures annually by offering directory submission services.

Now don’t get the wrong idea. I am not saying that making money online on any segment is easy. It is hard. But it is pretty much equally hard, regardless of the business model or segment you choose.

The takeaway message from this post, therefore, is the following: do not stress trying to choose the “best” way to make money online. And more importantly, don’t let that choice paralyze you. There is no “best” way or business model. Just choose something that you like to do, something that you are passionate about, and work damn hard at it. Work hard until you are among the best doing that. Once you reach that point, the money will come naturally.

    So true.

    Working at something that you truly love becomes more than just work. It takes on a life of its own. I find it funny that some people are still trying to find that “magic pill” that will catapult them to instant online stardom. If they would just realize that “magic pill” is inside them already, there would be a lot more really good blogs, and websites, out there.

    Keep up the great work!

    “What is the best way to make money online?”

    Insist your idea. That’s what I tell people.

    Daniel,

    You know it’s really sad and I just told a friend of mine this tonight.

    I know more people who could give a rats ass about blogging but know a topic so well they could fly in the clouds from day one probably.

    The other issue is I see so many bloggers out there blogging just in hopes of earning money and they have no passion for their writing and all they write is about useless crap they know nothing about.

    If you combined the two together, oh my God what might come about.

    Just my thought on this. If you truly want to make money from your blog, do it. Learn how, work hard and smart and keep at it and just do it. Quit complaining and go out there and make it happen.

    If one can do it so can another. Period.

    Keep writing the good stuff, man! 🙂

    Great post Daniel! So many people go through “paralysis by analysis” and give up even before they start!

    Yes you are totally right Daniel. When people start to see the internet as a platform/global marketplace, they will realize that they can make money online doing anything the love and are competent at.

    Online and offline businesses both have just one old strategy – “Add value to people by providing what they need or want” and you will earn big time. It’s just the tactics and the media via which you do so that’s ever evolving. Thanks to technological advancement.

    By the way, great e-book.

    This is the best line of this article –

    ~~~~”Work hard until you are among the best doing that.”~~~~
    Certainly if you will be able to reach at that position than making money will be really easy task.
    I have to agree, you make money online doing nothing…it’s because you love what you’re doing….you dedicate time doing the things that seems just like the ordinary routine. At the end of the day you earn without stressing yourself too much.
    I have no idea about anything called “the best”;
    it is look like advertise, no other opinion
  • Steve
    Very nice tip, Daniel. I see this question so often from “newbies”, and I always tell them, do what you enjoy. The rest will follow. Your passion for the subject will show in the work that you do.
    However as Godin once said:
    Every new project (or job, or hobby, or company) starts out exciting and fun. Then it gets harder and less fun, until it hits a low point-really hard and not much fun at all.
    And then you find yourself asking if the goal is even worth the hassle. Maybe you’re in a Dip-a temporary setback that will get better if you keep pushing. But maybe it’s really a Cul-de-Sac, which will never get better, no matter how hard you try.
    Very sane and encouraging. Bravo.
    Money will come naturally if you work hard with quality.
    I don’t disagree that working harder is essential to success. However, I do think that working smarter can get rid of a lot of unnecessary hard work. For example, I’ve learned the hard lesson of focusing too much on turnover and not enough on profitability. I’ve also realised that by being focused on finding clients that match my ideal client profile delivers much better results for the client and is much more rewarding for me, both financially and personally.
    Totally agree! If you persist, and work hard, and are motivated, you will succeed. The business doesn’t matter, only you matter!
    Earning money now days so easy. People can earn money so many ways through off line and on line.
    If we want earn money through online then blogging, affiliate marketing, seo and giving online teaching are best way to earn money online. These processes take less time to earn money.
    “They wonder if they should focus on blogging, affiliate marketing, search engine optimization, web design, selling ebooks, or what.”
    Do all of them!
    Well, perhaps not all of them. But I would recommend blogging, affiliate marketing, seo, and create your own products that solves peoples pains and issues.
    Hello Daniel,
    I agree that you have to be passionate about your subject. It can be difficult to decide upon which topic to specialize. One way to make this decision is to look back over the last three years and estimate how many hours you’ve spent playing soccer, programming, cycling, parenting, photographing, travel, etc. This should give you an idea of how your time is currently being spent. It’s also an indication of the amount of knowledge and experience that you can share with the readers of your blog in specific subject areas.
    You’re right Daniel. If there’s passion, commitment and sheer hard work, then I don’t think there’s any venture that wont succeed.
    It doesn’t matter whether you’re selling hand-knit carpet slippers online or blogging about the check-out counter in a supermarket, you can be very successful.
    Passion makes a lot of difference for me because I’m positive about my job, can’t wait to get to work and put in 150% or more because I believe in it.
  • Darni
    I agree with you.:) There are many ways to make money online,but no best. What we should do is choose the one which we like best.If not sure which one we like,just try all of them untill we find one that we are good at it.For me,I like affiliate marketing so much.It is very appealing to me.
  • macerz
    Let face it. I want to make money online and have no idea how to do it. I just started my blog on Blogger. Is this the first step I need to do? Just wonder?
  • Lee Ka Hoong
    I agree with you Daniel. We can actually make money online in every field, it’s just the matter of hardworking and how many effort that you put. Just like you mentioned about directory submission services, these people made six figure because they spent a lot of time doing the service for you.
    If we could spend the time and do it, we can make money online as well.
    Best Regards,
    Lee
  • YinTeing
    Yes, I really do agree- you can make money doing anything- with interest- we will take the pains to learn the other less appealing parts because we keep the big picture in focus always.
  • Chester
    I hope you could post a blog on “how to make money online” to help newbies and the unemployed/freelancer.
    It’s true, it doesn’t have to be the “best”, as long as you like doing what you’re doing.
  • Joel Friedlander
    Daniel,
    Good lesson to learn. It’s really important to me to enjoy my business and have a passion for it, because that’s what carries me through the time of building, when you’re not likely to be getting a lot of rewards from the market. If you really love what you’re doing, you can put the work in that’s necessary and enjoy it at the same time. Thanks!
  • Dana @ Blogging Update
    Yeah — every niche is the best if you do it right. Therefore, the important is do it right, not the niche.
  • Herrin Larkan
    The main thing that I take way from this, is to find something that suites you and then engage the process.
    Invest with consistent action and provide great value for other people and the money will come.
    Thanks for a great post and look forward to more.
  • Sam, SEM Specialist
    Great point, Daniel! I really wish more people would realize that they have much more chances to succeed in what *they do best* versus researching and learning *the best way to make money*.
  • Eric C
    How about, write about what you love?
  • Tom | Build That List
    That is exactly it! Find your own way to make money that works for you.
  • Gordon
    Nicely said, Daniel. I used to stress over what I wanted to do, and as a result I did nothing! For me it was about just allowing myself to do what came naturally.
  • SATISH
    Following the passion and working hard to make that passion earn for us, while still enjoying our work.
